Nigeria v Senegal

Port Said

Nigeria might have won their first two matches at the MTN Africa Cup of Nations but the Super Eagles still face the possibility of being eliminated at the tournament in Egypt.

Defeat at the hands of Senegal, and a shift in their goal difference, could yet cost Nigeria although it would be a major upset.

Nigeria need only a draw to make sure of progress after their wins over Ghana and Zimbabwe.

Senegal are three points behind and must win to have any chance as Ghana, who also have three
points, are expected to beat Zimbabwe in the other Group D match in Ismailia.

Nigeria’s two victories have been achieved despite a lack of goalscoring acumen, particularly from Obafemi Martins, who was envisaged as the potential star of the tournament.

Coach Augustine Eguavoen has said he is not concerned with the lack of goals from his key strikers but that when they do find the net it would a major boost for their confidence.

Martins came into the tournament with nine goals in 10 matches for Nigeria but has now gone 180 minutes at the MTN Africa Cup of Nations without scoring.

Senegal know their continued presence at the event is dependent on beating the Super Eagles after Ghana handed them a serious setback in the last game at Port Said.

Coach Abdoulaye Sarr said his players were out muscled by a more committed Ghana side and showed his displeasure at the team’s star names by taking El Hadji Diouf off early in the second half.

Sarr, however, made an error of judgement in leaving burly midfielder Pape Bouba Diop on the bench for the match against Ghana and by the time he brought him on to nullify the strength of Stephen Appiah, the damage had already been done.
