Ghana 2008 - Team Profile - Guinea
|
After two successive quarter-final appearances at the MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals, Guinea will be hoping to at least go one better and reach the semifinals of the 2008 tournament in Ghana. The ‘Syli Nationale’ have been one of Africa’s form teams over the last year and with a star-studded squad will have high hoes of making the final four for the first time since 1976 when the tournament was held in Ethiopia. Guinea are ranked 30th in the latest FIFA world rankings, evidence of their growing acumen. They were also comfortable winners of their qualifying group although they had to claw themselves back from a position in the basement of the standings after they picked up just a single point from their firs two matches. Veteran French coach Robert Nouzaret took over at the start of 2007 to engineer their recovery, which saw Guinea win away at both Algeria and the Gambia, their major rivals for a place at the finals in Ghana. Guinea will play in their ninth MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals but their third successive appearance in a new standard for the west African country. In the 2000 qualifiers they were disqualified by FIFA after government interference in the running of the football federation’s affairs. Much of their hopes for the tournament in Ghana will rest on the form of captain and midfield inspiration Pascal Feindouno, as well as strikers Ismael Bangoura and Fode Mansare. In defence, Guinea’s defensive spine is secured by the presence of French-born Dianbodo Balde.
